Colorado Council on the Arts Takes a Hit

  • by: Red Hawk

The Denver Post and 9 News are reporting on the Colorado Council on the Arts and its $5,000 fellowship grant to subsidize a sex toys on hooks art project.

And though this kind of fraud and waste is expected to be brought to light over the next few months (C & D making them electoral issues once again), the more interesting point of this story comes from Governor Owens:

Obviously, this is offensive and in extremely poor taste It serves as an important reminder that whenever tax dollars are involved, government must be cautious and prudent.

Cautious, indeed.

And with the Independence Institute dedicating itself to uncovering such examples, were sure to hear of more instances like this (perhaps not quite as obscene.)

Though the $5,000 grant cited in this story may seem to be a drop in the bucket, this is exactly the kind of sound-bite campaign rhetoric the conservatives of the party will latch onto. The only real comeback the Yes on C & D crowd can use is something along the lines of Yes, but those grants were eliminated anyway because of budget cuts, and thats not the kind of argument thats going to sway the voters.

Because, according to John Caldera:

It’s hard to say we’re in a budget crisis when taxpayers are paying for this kind of smut.

  1. I like Buffie too but, “lady who has strong ties” I think your reference to bondage is worse than the Pueblo Dems dangling dildos reference. Gooooooo Pueblo!

  2. You want to talk about taxpayer wasted money!  How about the sixty thousand dollar salary that Mr. Caldera takes home from the tax exempt frauds at the Independence Institute?  Glad to know us taxpayers are subsidize your salary John, I am sure you aren’t making enough over at KOA.  Grover can afford to pay your salary without the help of Colorado taxpayers.

  3. i personally think that they need to be careful what they scream about. i really don’t care about this as an example of wasting money. you’re not going to get my attention until you have examples of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  4. It all adds up Susie my dear, it all adds up.  Besides, the government should take some accountability for its mistakes.  They’re taking money I earn, and spending it: they better well expect the utmost scrutiny.

  5. So what’s Caldera’s point?  That the Colorado Council for the Arts has poor taste?  The Legislature didn’t order that project up…

Let’s face it, when the II goes after a decision not even made by the Lege that costs a grand sum total of $5k, they’re desperate.

  6. Well, is it any real surprise? The Arts Council is just one of many tax payer supported rip-offs in this state.  Just ask one of the founders of this site-Rick O’Donnell of the “Commission on Higher Education”.  He sends several million dollars out of state to a group calling itself “The Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad” so they can support their hobby.  And yet the state owned tourist railroad is in very bad shape–both the physical plant and financially.

  7. Bob – O’Donnell isn’t a founder of this site and the Commission on Higher Education doesn’t give money to the railroad.  Have some more coffee.
